Ticona to invest in UHMW PE plant in the Asia-Pacific region

23-Jun-05
Ticona Technical Polymers, the engineering polymers business of Celanese Corporation, which produces and markets a broad range of engineering polymers, is planning to invest in a new ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW PE) plant in the Asia-Pacific region. Its new 20,000 tpa facility is aimed towards increasing the company's global GUR® UHMW-PE capacity to 90,000 tpa. The facility is scheduled to commence its operation in the second half of 2007. With a sale of about US$863 million in 2004, Ticona also operates state-of-the art GUR UHMW-PE facilities in Bishop, Texas, and Oberhausen, Germany. Selection of the site in the Asia-Pacific region is considered to be in an advanced stage. Preliminary engineering work is known to have been complete and plans for final engineering and construction are underway. This investment is anticipated towards meet the growing demand for GUR UHMW-PE, believed to have an extremely low coefficient of friction and thus considered to provide outstanding abrasion resistance and toughness, The new plant also extend the company's global manufacturing capabilities towards an expanded product range.
