In pursuit of its plans to tap its'gas reserves (the world's third largest), Qatar has planned a petrochem project. Total SA, Europe's third-largest oil company, and state-owned Qatar Petroleum plan to develop a US$1.2 billion petrochemical plant. The plant, located in the industrial city of Mesaieed, is to have a capacity of 450,000 tpa of low density polyethylene. Output will mainly satiate surging demand for plastics and solvents in China and India. Italy's Snamprogetti SpA, Eni SpA's engineering unit and Europe's second-largest oil services company, will build the plant with its Greek partners. Exxon Mobil Corp., Royal Dutch Shell Plc and other international companies are spending billions of dollars to develop Qatar's gas reserves, benefiting from cheap costs to meet rising global demand for energy products.
