A revised proposal on the ban on plastic bags has been submitted to the CM of Maharashtra by the V Ranganathan Committee. A ban on plastics bags, announced in the wake of the flooding of 26 July, seems to finally in the concrete stages, but with a few changes:
* The ban will apply to only plastic bags of thickness less than 100 microns, with the exception of packages for dairy industry.
* The end user will not be penalized for using a plastic bag not confirming to the rule. The onus for sticking to the ban will be with the manufacturers and retailers.
* There will be no ban on the manufacture of less than 100 micron bags in the state. However, no distribution will be allowed in the stae.
* Those not complying will face severe penalties: 3 months prison term or Rs25,000 as fine for a first offence.
