BOPP film supply exceeds demand

07-Jun-06
The past 5 years has witnessed 8.5% growth per annum in global demand for biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film. The rise has been an estimated 1.4 million tpa in 5 years and is estimated to reach 4.27 million tons in 2005, as per a report by market analysis firm PCI Films Consulting. Interestingly, on the supply side, an additional 2.39 million tpa has been installed over the last five years, creating the problem of oversupply. Demand for BOPP film is estimated to continue growing by 5.9% pa to reach 5.7 million tpa by 2010. Demand from Asia is expected to account for more than 65% of world growth over the next five years. Whereas world capacity growth is forecast at 12%, 57% of capacity additions are to mushroom in Asia. Almost 62% of this incremental capacity was commissioned in China, resulting in significant oversupply in some regions increasing competitor activity.
