The construction Qatofin’s US$3.2 bln LLDPE plant has commenced. Qatofin is a joint venture between Qapco (63%), Total Petrochemicals (36%) and QP (1%). Operations at the 450,000 tpa plant are expected to start in Q4 of 2008. The plant will be able to process 422,000 tpa of ethylene and 38,000 tpa of butene-1. Butene-1 will be supplied by Q-Chem II and the 40,000 tpa of ethylene that Q-Chem II will require to produce such quantities of butene-1 is to be supplied by Qatofin. The LLDPE will be marketed in Asia and Europe.
Italy's Snamprogetti has won the engineering, procurement and construction contract and Archirodon of Greece, a global heavy civil and industrial works contractor has been awarded the contract for the marine works.
