Degussa is to launch pilot production this year of a low cost polycarbonate film. Degussa's Plexiglas unit has developed a cover layer of appropriate thickness with high quality optical requirements that can be manufactured economically.
The new film technology will assist in low cost production of Blu-ray discs. Blu-ray is among the latest technologies in line to become the acceptable standard for the next generation of optical discs. Blu-ray is used for storing computer data, movies and music and can store over 5 times as much information as DVDs using blue-violet lasers that read the data stored just 0.1mm under the surface of the disc.
Working with partners Philips, Singulus and Sony, the company has already demonstrated functioning discs and is set to begin mass production of the film next year.
