DuPont and world aluminum leader Alcoa have developed a new construction material designed to shield building facades from damage caused by hurricane-level wind-borne debris. In the new material, a thin layer of fabric made from Kevlar fiber is introduced between the Reynobond aluminum skins and polyethylene core, resulting in a light, flexible aluminum composite material. The fiber acts as a safety net by helping to protect the facades of buildings from hurricane-propelled debris, frequently the main cause of hurricane damage. The Kevlar-lined Reynobond was different because it needs no concrete, plywood or other reinforcing material.
