Lightning forces shutdowns in S. Korean refining units

14-Jul-06
A lightning strike leading to a power supply outage in South Korea's southwestern region has compelled shutdowns of some oil refining units at Hyundai Oilbank Corp. and Samsung Total Petrochemical Co. Ltd. Hyundai Oilbank has shut down its 25,000 bpd No.3 gas oil hydro desulphurising unit and 31,000-bpd hydrocracker due to the power outage late on Wednesday. Samsung Total shut down its 650,000 tpa naphtha cracker and 800,000 tpa reformer at the Daesan Petrochemical complex. This is the second naphtha cracker in South Korea to be shut down during a thunderstorm this year. Earlier this year in April, Lotte Daesan Petrochemical Corp. shut its 650,000 tpa naphtha cracker for about five days due to a technical hitch caused by a thunderstorm.
