Exxon Mobil and Qatar have agreed earlier this year to build a US$2 billion ethylene plant, the world's largest, to meet rising demand for petrochemicals in China and India. The plant, to be located in Qatar's industrial port city of Ras Laffan is to produce 1.6 million tpa of ethylene, starting in 2011.
Middle East nations such as Qatar are tapping their gas reserves to boost ethylene production by 20.5 million tons through 2010, about half of new global capacity.
