Formosa's VCM plant shut down due to leak caused by failed pipe

07-Aug-06
A six-inch pipe failed at Formosa Plastics Vinyl Chloride Monomer plant, releasing an estimated 5,606 pounds of ethylene dichloride; 5,727 pounds of hydrogen chloride and 24,991 pounds of vinyl chloride monomer. Water monitor were trained on the release, causing water to mix with the materials from the failed pipe. This water was sent to the water treatment plant for cleaning, To reduce the possibility of re-occurrence, Formosa plans to redesign this piping system before the unit is restarted. The new system will include an instantaneous reading probe to monitor corrosion/erosion.
