Autoliv Inc., a the global leader in automotive safety systems has developed a new material-a thermoplastic substance injection molded onto the magnesium or steel structure-for steering wheels. The new patented product will be introduced on the new 2009 Renault Mégane and will be exhibited at the upcoming Paris Auto Show. The new material is soft, environment friendly and replaces polyurethane as covering material on the steering wheel rim and other parts of the steering wheel armature.
The new material can be recyclable thereby reducing waste. As opposed to traditional with PU, there are no edges that need to be peeled off. The quality and the appearance of the steering wheel are improved due to elimination of deburring and the considerable reduction in size of the injection gate. The injection moulding process is also much faster than the hardening process used for polyurethane.
