Industry overcapacity has rendered the European EPS businesses unprofitable for many years now. Polystyrene joint venture Nova Innovene has decided to close its 65,000tpa expandable polystyrene plant at Berre, in France, next year. The plant would require a significant level of capital investment, which cannot be justified. The existing customers based in South Europe can be supplied from other facilities.
The company has also confirmed the permanent shutdown of its 75,000 tpa EPS unit at Carrington, UK. This plant had been mothballed since 2002.
