PetroChina has received the nod of approval from the government to increase capacity three-fold at its small refinery in Hohhot, capital of Inner Mongolia in north China. An investment outlay of 8.3 bln yuan (US$1.22 bln) is planned to expand the 30,000 bpd refinery to 100,000 bpd while adding other facilities including a 150,000 tpa polypropylene unit. To commence this year, the expansion plan is expected to be executed by 2012.
By the year 2012, China aims to get rid of oil processing plants that are smaller than 20,000 bpd and encourage the closure, merger or transformation of refining units with capacities of 20,000-40,000 bpd as part of measures to oust outdated capacity.
