Qatofin and Q-Chem sign letter of intent with Technip

Qatar Petrochemical Company Ltd. (QAPCO) and Total Petrochemicals through their Qatofin joint venture, and Qatar Petroleum with Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LLC through their Q-Chem II joint venture, have signed a letter of intent with Technip France. Technip is to provide engineering, procurement and construction services to build an ethylene cracker in Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar. The Q-Chem II project and the ethylene cracker are expected to commence operations by the end of 2008. The cracker is to provide ethylene feedstock via pipeline to derivative units planned for development in Mesaieed, Qatar. Qatofin project will include a new 450,000 tpa linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) unit. The new unit, one of the largest of its type in the world, is to commence in 2008, and will be located in Mesaieed alongside the existing QAPCO polyethylene units (LDPE). Q-Chem II project will include a 350,000 tpa polyethylene plant and a 350,000 tpa normal alpha olefins plant located adjacent to the existing Q-Chem complex. Both processes will utilize Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LLC's proprietary technology.
