Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. (Mitsui), plans to set up a petrochemical R&D centre in Singapore, scheduled to be opened on 1 October 2006. This will be the company's first R&D establishment outside Japan and it will be housed at the Institute of Chemical & Engineering Sciences (ICES), a research institute of Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), in Jurong Island.
Named Mitsui Chemicals Singapore Technical Centre, the centre will focus on the areas of catalysis and asymmetric synthesis. Catalysis is a forefront technology that provides the means to create environmentally friendly, efficient processes and new materials and chemicals. As fewer steps are needed in the entire chemical process, this translates into tremendous savings of time, energy and costs.
Currently among the top 10 petrochemical hubs in the world, with strong research capabilities at A*STAR and the research scientists and engineers being trained at ICES and the universities, Singapore has increasingly been attracting foreign investments in R&D of new technologies and processes.
