Sinopec plans to build ethylene plants in Shanghai and Wuhan

China's largest oil refiner Sinopec, plans to build ethylene plants in Shanghai and Wuhan. Subject to government approval, capacity of the Wuhan plant is projected at 800,000 tpa and capacity at Shanghai will be 1 million tpa. China currently imports over 50% of its petrochem requirements. As the economy continues to boom, so will demand increase. Plans are underway to set up at least seven major crackers before 2010 to meet strong demand growth.
