In early 2011, Uhde Inventa-Fischer and BASF SE successfully commissioned a plant for the production of Ecoflex®, the biodegradable co-polyester polymer developed by BASF. The Ecoflex® polymer production capacity obtained at the Ludwigshafen production site could thus be increased from previously 14,000 to 74,000 tpa. The plant uses the patented proprietary 2R-technology of Uhde Inventa-Fischer. The proven and particularly energy-efficient Uhde Inventa-Fischer 2R-process has been geared to the needs of the customer BASF and is perfectly suited for the production of the sustainable plastic Ecoflex®. The 2Rprocess was invented by Uhde Inventa-Fischer and is based on the patented ESPREE® and DISCAGE® reactors. In these two reactors, the process-relevant chemical reactions take place as well as the formation of the polymer chains. The finishing process steps for the end product are part of the BASF know-how. The Uhde Inventa-Fischer scope of supplies and services included the basic and detail engineering, the supply of all essential plant equipment and the supervision of the erection and commissioning activities. Furthermore the operating personnel were trained by the experienced specialists of Uhde Inventa-Fischer. According to BASF, Ecoflex® is a petrochemicals-based plastic which has the properties of conventional polyethylene but is fully biodegradable under industrial composting conditions in accordance with DIN EN 13432 requirements. Ecoflex® polymer is further used for the production of Ecovio® which contains the renewable raw material polylactic acid (PLA).
