Ube plans one bln baht project for expansion of caprolactam capacity

Global demand for caprolactam would grow by 2% pa on an average, while engineering nylon demand would rise 8-10%. Ube Group (Thailand), Southeast Asia's solo producer of caprolactam and the only engineering nylon maker that services Thailand's automobile industry is mulling : * A one billion baht project that would expand caprolactam capacity to 130,000 tpa from 110,000 tpa. * Expansion of engineering nylon capacity to 75,000 tpa from 25,000 tpa at an investment of 1.4 billion baht * Doubling of nylon compound capacity to 12,000 tpa from 6,000 tpa. Ube Nylon (Thailand) was a joint-venture partner of Thai Petrochemical Industry Plc, recently renamed IRPC Plc, prior to the economic crisis in 1997. IRPC no longer holds shares in Ube. However, these plans will be on hold till the company assesses the viability of the project, and also gets approval from its parent firm.
