The US$67.6 mln port in China - the largest petrochemical port in the Pearl River Delta has gone into operation with an annual handling capacity equivalent to one-tenth of the oil needs of southern China's Guangdong province.
The port has a planned annual handling capacity of around 12 million metric tons, and can receive tankers of up to 100,000 deadweight tons.
Guangdong region's annual demand for fuel oil is 150 million tons, almost 60% of the volume is satisfied by products shipped in from overseas. In the past, Guangdong has struggled to bring in enough oil by sea due to a lack of capacity at its ports, prompting investment in new facilities. The petrochemical port is part of a wider complex at Nansha that includes storage depots and container terminals as the city vies with Hong Kong for business in southern China.
