Weak downstream demand compels Formosa to extend cracker shutdown indefinitely

27-Oct-08
Compelled by weak demand in Asia, Taiwanese petrochem major Formosa Petrochemical has decide to keep its No. 3 naphtha-fed steam cracker at Mailiao shuttered. Capacities at the plant total 1.2 mln tpa of ethylene and 600,000 tpa of propylene. The plant, originally shuttered for a 45-day turnaround, was initially set to restart Oct 19, which was later delayed to Oct 25. Now, faced with rising stockpiles of ethylene and propylene due to weak demand, the company has concluded that it will not restart the plant for an indefinite period, as per a report in Platts.
