BorsodChem likely to defer TDI expansion in Hungary due to slack in demand

02-Feb-09
BorsodChem Zrt., Central Eastern Europe's advanced plastics raw material producer is currently considering to postpone construction of its 200,000 mtpa TDI plant to be situated at Hungary's Kazincbarcika production site owing to extensive customer destocking activity. Recently, the global demand for isocyanates (MDI and TDI) has dropped substantially amid a gloom in region's construction, the automotive and the furniture industry. However, the 30% debottlenecking project for MDI at the same site will not be affected by this decision and is supposed to be completed as scheduled until the end of 2009. The company houses manufacturing facility in the Czech Republic and Poland besides Hungary. Its products are sold in external markets supported by its branch offices in Brussels and Moscow as well as its trading subsidiaries in Milan and Poland. In addition, BorsodChem is the largest PVC resin and aniline producer in the region, sole MDI (methylene-diphenil-di-isocyanate) and leading TDI (toluene-di-isocyanate) producer.
