A detergent-resistant glass reinforced polypropylene (PP) that offers cost-effective production benefits and long-term performance for appliances has been introduced by Borealis. The new material, GB266WG, can be used for the interior of washing machines and dishwashers, and reduces the number of materials used in the production process. Traditionally, different PP materials have been needed to survive the corrosive effects of the different types of detergents in dishwashers and washing machines. By eliminating this requirement, GB266WG enables manufacturers to reduce their inventory materials through the use of the same PP for both appliances.
GB266WG is lightweight and durable, allowing it to withstand the highly aggressive environment found inside white goods. The new grade provides maximum resistance to the detergents used in both dishwashers and washing machines, making it a highly effective alternative to steel parts such as dishwasher frames and other structural parts. Its performance can be attributed to a novel stabilisation system that also enhances the lifetime of important structural components. It prevents the additional ageing effects of light, oxygen and usage-induced wear and tear, such as loss of strength, stiffness or flexibility, discolouration, scratching or loss of gloss.
As a lightweight material, Borealis' GB266WG offers easier handling and transport of components and finished appliances when compared to traditional steel materials. The amount of energy required during the usage of the appliances is also reduced. Additionally, it decreases thermal and acoustic transmission, minimising the need for separate insulation materials and further lowering production costs for appliance manufacturers. GB266WG is also characterised by high stiffness and low heat extension. This ensures a watertight connection between components such as a PP dishwasher frame and connecting steel parts.
