The Dow Chemical Company is currently well-established in the Yangtze River Delta: 4 of its 7 production facilities in the mainland are located in the region; Shanghai will house a world-class research and development centre and a global information centre; Zhangjiagang will be the company's most important production base in the Asia-Pacific region. Despite a concentration of the companies activities in the region, Dow has plans to invest further in the region particularly since the area offers the strategic advantages of proximity to its customer base and convenient transportation. Availability of feedstock, access and proximity to customers and marketplace, readiness and sophistication of infrastructure, also influence investment decisions.
Dow has invested US$200 mln in the Zhangjiagang plant, and plans an additional US$200 million in the next two years as more than half of its major customers for lepoxy and polystyrene have their manufacturing bases within 500 kms of the site. Proximity to the marine jetty on the Yangtze River allows the shipping of raw materials and products by barge safely and efficiently.
