Investment in the Rio de Janeiro Petrochemical Complex at Comperj is estimated to increase by US$2 bln to about US$ 8.5 bln. The complex will have the capacity to process 150,000 bpd of heavy oil coming from the Campos Basin and produce petrochemical raw material and other products. The project is the result of a partnership between Petrobras, the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) and the Ultra group. Petrobras and its partners will implement the Basic Petrochemical Unit at a total investment estimated at US$3.5 bln, with production including ethylene, propylene, benzene and paraxylene.
The country estimates to save over US$2 bln every year by using heavy oil as feedstock, instead of naphtha which is imported.
