The details of proposals for a new petrochemicals complex at Ras Laffan, Qatar, preliminary agreement for which was signed in 2005, have been released. An agreement has been signed for a 51:49 joint venture between Qatar Petroleum (QP) and ExxonMobil Chemical Company.
The US$3 billion complex includes a 1.3 million tpa steam cracker and associated derivative units and will employ ExxonMobil's proprietary steam cracking furnace and polyethylene technologies. The complex is to produce 570,000 tpa of Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE), 420,000 tpa of Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) and 700,000 tpa of Ethylene Glycol. Initial production is expected in 2012.
Feedstock material ethane and propane will be procured from Qatar's gas development projects.
