After heavy rains led to flooding, Oil and Natural Gas Corp. (ONGC) was forced to shut its Hazira gas complex in western Gujarat on Tuesday, halting gas supplies. Over 60% of India's natural gas supply has been disrupted, and many industrial units in western Gujarat state have been forced to close. Gas supplies to power and fertiliser plants in north and west India are unlikely to resume for at least another four days as floods have not receded. Offshore fields of Oil and Natural Gas Corp. along with gas pumping stations have been affected at ONGC.
ONGC had capped gas wells at the offshore platforms of its Bassein field and the Panna-Mukta and Tapti fields after water came into the Hazira plant. 6 power plants of state-run National Thermal Power Corp. Ltd (NTPC) are operating below capacity due to gas shortages. About 10% of the country's total power capacity of 123,000 megawatts comes from gas-fired plants.
