Demand for plastic film in the United States is expected to increase by 2.6% pa through 2010, according to a study by Freedonia Group.
Cost competitiveness and versatility in application will sustain low density polyethylene (LDPE) as the largest plastic film resin. LDPE usage is also increasing on account of increased opportunities in areas such as produce and snack packaging, stretch and shrink wrap and trash bags.
High density polyethylene (HDPE) film is expected to grow at a slightly faster pace due to good growth in areas such as baked goods packaging and retail bags.
Polypropylene film demand at 3.4% pa through 2010, will grow at the fastest pace, driven by produce, grain mill, dairy and other food packaging applications.
Polyester film demand will decline through 2010 as a result of decreasing use in photographic film and magnetic tape.
